Alexanter the Great at the battle of Gavgamila, 331 B.C.

This painting depicts the battle of of Gaugamela is the largest and most decisive battle of Alexander the Great against Darius in 331 BC. Alexander the Great, the triumph of the battle, can be seen in the center of the painting, on his horse. Darius is said to have had 15 armed elephants, which for the first time are reported to have lined up on a battlefield, which we can see in the background on the left.
